| 1 | Know you not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) that the law hath dominion over a man, as long as it liveth? | Thưa anh em, –tôi nói đây là nói với những người biết Luật– anh em không biết điều này sao: Luật chỉ có hiệu lực đối với người ta, bao lâu người ta còn sống? | Ἢ ἀγνοεῖτε, ἀδελφοί, γινώσκουσιν γὰρ νόμον λαλῶ, ὅτι ὁ νόμος κυριεύει τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐφ’ ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ; | An ignoratis, fratres (scientibus enim legem loquor), quia lex in homine dominatur quanto tempore vivit? | Or don’t you know, brothers (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives? |
| 2 | For the woman that hath an husband, whilst her husband liveth is bound to the law. But if her husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. | Tỉ dụ như người đàn bà có chồng, thì luật buộc theo chồng bao lâu chồng còn sống. Nhưng nếu chồng chết, thì vợ không còn bị luật ràng buộc với chồng nữa. | ἡ γὰρ ὕπανδρος γυνὴ τῷ ζῶντι ἀνδρὶ δέδεται νόμῳ· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ ὁ ἀνήρ, κατήργηται ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ ἀνδρός. | Nam quæ sub viro est mulier, vivente viro, alligata est legi: si autem mortuus fuerit vir ejus, soluta est a lege viri. | For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband. |
| 3 | Therefore, whilst her husband liveth, she shall be called an adulteress, if she be with another man: but if her husband be dead, she is delivered from the law of her husband; so that she is not an adulteress, if she be with another man. | Vậy bao lâu chồng còn sống, mà vợ đi lấy người khác, thì sẽ bị gọi là kẻ ngoại tình. Nhưng nếu chồng chết, thì vợ được tự do không phải giữ luật đó nữa, và có đi lấy người khác, cũng không phải là ngoại tình. | ἄρα οὖν ζῶντος τοῦ ἀνδρὸς μοιχαλὶς χρηματίσει ἐὰν γένηται ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ ὁ ἀνήρ, ἐλευθέρα ἐστὶν ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου, τοῦ μὴ εἶναι αὐτὴν μοιχαλίδα γενομένην ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ. | Igitur, vivente viro, vocabitur adultera si fuerit cum alio viro: si autem mortuus fuerit vir ejus, liberata est a lege viri, ut non sit adultera si fuerit cum alio viro. | So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man. |
| 4 | Therefore, my brethren, you also are become dead to the law, by the body of Christ; that you may belong to another, who is risen again from the dead, that we may bring forth fruit to God. | Đối với anh em cũng thế. Bởi được liên kết với thân thể Đức Ki-tô, anh em đã chết đối với Luật Mô-sê. Giờ đây, anh em thuộc về một người khác, tức là thuộc về Đấng đã được Thiên Chúa cho sống lại từ cõi chết, để chúng ta sinh hoa kết quả cho Thiên Chúa. | Ὥστε, ἀδελφοί μου, καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐθανατώθητε τῷ νόμῳ διὰ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ, εἰς τὸ γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς ἑτέρῳ, τῷ ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγερθέντι ἵνα καρποφορήσωμεν τῷ θεῷ. | Itaque fratres mei, et vos mortificati estis legi per corpus Christi: ut sitis alterius, qui ex mortuis resurrexit, ut fructificemus Deo. | Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might produce fruit to God. |
| 5 | For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death. | Vì trước đây, khi chúng ta còn bị tính xác thịt chi phối, thì các đam mê tội lỗi dùng Lề Luật mà hoạt động nơi các chi thể chúng ta, để chúng ta sinh hoa kết quả đưa tới cái chết. | ὅτε γὰρ ἦμεν ἐν τῇ σαρκί, τὰ παθήματα τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν τὰ διὰ τοῦ νόμου ἐνηργεῖτο ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ἡμῶν εἰς τὸ καρποφορῆσαι τῷ θανάτῳ· | Cum enim essemus in carne, passiones peccatorum, quæ per legem erant, operabantur in membris nostris, ut fructificarent morti. | For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law worked in our members to bring out fruit to death. |
| 6 | But now we are loosed from the law of death, wherein we were detained; so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. | Nhưng nay, chúng ta không còn bị Lề Luật ràng buộc nữa, vì chúng ta đã chết đối với cái vẫn giam hãm chúng ta. Như vậy, chúng ta phục vụ Thiên Chúa theo tinh thần mới, chứ không theo bản văn cũ của Lề Luật. | νυνὶ δὲ κατηργήθημεν ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου, ἀποθανόντες ἐν ᾧ κατειχόμεθα, ὥστε δουλεύειν ἡμᾶς ἐν καινότητι πνεύματος καὶ οὐ παλαιότητι γράμματος. | Nunc autem soluti sumus a lege mortis, in qua detinebamur, ita ut serviamus in novitate spiritus, et non in vetustate litteræ. | But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter. |
| 7 | What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? God forbid. But I do not know sin, but by the law; for I had not known concupiscence, if the law did not say: Thou shalt not covet. | Vậy phải nói sao? Lề Luật là tội chăng? Không phải thế! Nhưng tôi đã chẳng biết tội là gì nếu không có Lề Luật. Thật vậy, tôi đã chẳng biết ham muốn là gì, nếu Luật không dạy: Ngươi không được ham muốn. | Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; ὁ νόμος ἁμαρτία; μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἔγνων εἰ μὴ διὰ νόμου, τήν τε γὰρ ἐπιθυμίαν οὐκ ᾔδειν εἰ μὴ ὁ νόμος ἔλεγεν· Οὐκ ἐπιθυμήσεις· | Quid ergo dicemus? lex peccatum est? Absit. Sed peccatum non cognovi, nisi per legem: nam concupiscentiam nesciebam, nisi lex diceret: Non concupisces. | What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” |
| 8 | But sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. | Tội đã thừa cơ, dùng điều răn mà làm nảy sinh trong tôi đủ thứ ham muốn. Thật vậy, không có Lề Luật thì tội đã chết rồi. | ἀφορμὴν δὲ λαβοῦσα ἡ ἁμαρτία διὰ τῆς ἐντολῆς κατειργάσατο ἐν ἐμοὶ πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν, χωρὶς γὰρ νόμου ἁμαρτία νεκρά. | Occasione autem accepta, peccatum per mandatum operatum est in me omnem concupiscentiam. Sine lege enim peccatum mortuum erat. | But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead. |
| 9 | And I lived some time without the law. But when the commandment came, sin revived, | Xưa kia, không có Luật thì tôi sống; nhưng từ khi có điều răn thì tội bắt đầu sống, | ἐγὼ δὲ ἔζων χωρὶς νόμου ποτέ· ἐλθούσης δὲ τῆς ἐντολῆς ἡ ἁμαρτία ἀνέζησεν, | Ego autem vivebam sine lege aliquando: sed cum venisset mandatum, peccatum revixit. | I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. |
| 10 | And I died. And the commandment that was ordained to life, the same was found to be unto death to me. | còn tôi thì chết. Thành thử điều răn lẽ ra phải đưa đến sự sống, lại dẫn tôi đến chỗ chết. | ἐγὼ δὲ ἀπέθανον, καὶ εὑρέθη μοι ἡ ἐντολὴ ἡ εἰς ζωὴν αὕτη εἰς θάνατον· | Ego autem mortuus sum: et inventum est mihi mandatum, quod erat ad vitam, hoc esse ad mortem. | The commandment which was for life, this I found to be for death; |
| 11 | For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, seduced me, and by it killed me. | Quả thế, tội đã thừa cơ, dùng điều răn để quyến rũ tôi và cũng dùng điều răn đó để giết tôi. | ἡ γὰρ ἁμαρτία ἀφορμὴν λαβοῦσα διὰ τῆς ἐντολῆς ἐξηπάτησέν με καὶ δι’ αὐτῆς ἀπέκτεινεν. | Nam peccatum occasione accepta per mandatum, seduxit me, et per illud occidit. | for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. |
| 12 | Wherefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. | Như vậy, Lề Luật là thánh, và điều răn cũng là thánh, đúng và tốt. | ὥστε ὁ μὲν νόμος ἅγιος, καὶ ἡ ἐντολὴ ἁγία καὶ δικαία καὶ ἀγαθή. | Itaque lex quidem sancta, et mandatum sanctum, et justum, et bonum. | Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good. |
| 13 | Was that then which is good, made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it may appear sin, by that which is good, wrought death in me; that sin, by the commandment, might become sinful above measure. | Vậy phải chăng điều tốt lại đã gây nên cái chết cho tôi? Không phải thế! Nhưng chính tội đã dùng điều tốt mà gây nên cái chết cho tôi: như vậy, tội để lộ chân tướng và cho thấy tất cả sức mạnh tội lỗi của nó. | Τὸ οὖν ἀγαθὸν ἐμοὶ ⸀ἐγένετο θάνατος; μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλὰ ἡ ἁμαρτία, ἵνα φανῇ ἁμαρτία διὰ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ μοι κατεργαζομένη θάνατον· ἵνα γένηται καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν ἁμαρτωλὸς ἡ ἁμαρτία διὰ τῆς ἐντολῆς. | Quod ergo bonum est, mihi factum est mors? Absit. Sed peccatum, ut appareat peccatum, per bonum operatum est mihi mortem: ut fiat supra modum peccans peccatum per mandatum. | Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, was producing death in me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceedingly sinful. |
| 14 | For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin. | Vẫn biết rằng Lề Luật là bởi Thần Khí, nhưng tôi thì lại mang tính xác thịt, bị bán làm tôi cho tội lỗi. | Οἴδαμεν γὰρ ὅτι ὁ νόμος πνευματικός ἐστιν· ἐγὼ δὲ ⸀σάρκινός εἰμι, πεπραμένος ὑπὸ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν. | Scimus enim quia lex spiritualis est: ego autem carnalis sum, venundatus sub peccato. | For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin. |
| 15 | For that which I work, I understand not. For I do not that good which I will; but the evil which I hate, that I do. | Thật vậy, tôi làm gì tôi cũng chẳng hiểu: vì điều tôi muốn, thì tôi không làm, nhưng điều tôi ghét, thì tôi lại cứ làm. | ὃ γὰρ κατεργάζομαι οὐ γινώσκω· οὐ γὰρ ὃ θέλω τοῦτο πράσσω, ἀλλ’ ὃ μισῶ τοῦτο ποιῶ. | Quod enim operor, non intelligo: non enim quod volo bonum, hoc ago: sed quod odi malum, illud facio. | For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. |
| 16 | If then I do that which I will not, I consent to the law, that it is good. | Nếu tôi cứ làm điều tôi không muốn, thì tức là tôi đồng ý với Lề Luật và nhận rằng Lề Luật là tốt. | εἰ δὲ ὃ οὐ θέλω τοῦτο ποιῶ, σύμφημι τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι καλός. | Si autem quod nolo, illud facio: consentio legi, quoniam bona est. | But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good. |
| 17 | Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. | Vậy thật ra không còn phải là chính tôi làm điều đó, nhưng là tội vẫn ở trong tôi. | νυνὶ δὲ οὐκέτι ἐγὼ κατεργάζομαι αὐτὸ ἀλλὰ ἡ ⸀οἰκοῦσα ἐν ἐμοὶ ἁμαρτία. | Nunc autem jam non ego operor illud, sed quod habitat in me peccatum. | So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. |
| 18 | For I know that there dwelleth not in me, that is to say, in my flesh, that which is good. For to will, is present with me; but to accomplish that which is good, I find not. | Tôi biết rằng sự thiện không ở trong tôi, nghĩa là trong xác thịt tôi. Thật vậy, muốn sự thiện thì tôi có thể muốn, nhưng làm thì không. | οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ οἰκεῖ ἐν ἐμοί, τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου, ἀγαθόν· τὸ γὰρ θέλειν παράκειταί μοι, τὸ δὲ κατεργάζεσθαι τὸ καλὸν ⸀οὔ· | Scio enim quia non habitat in me, hoc est in carne mea, bonum. Nam velle, adjacet mihi: perficere autem bonum, non invenio. | For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. |
| 19 | For the good which I will, I do not; but the evil which I will not, that I do. | Sự thiện tôi muốn thì tôi không làm, nhưng sự ác tôi không muốn, tôi lại cứ làm. | οὐ γὰρ ὃ θέλω ποιῶ ἀγαθόν, ἀλλὰ ὃ οὐ θέλω κακὸν τοῦτο πράσσω. | Non enim quod volo bonum, hoc facio: sed quod nolo malum, hoc ago. | For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice. |
| 20 | Now if I do that which I will not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. | Nếu tôi cứ làm điều tôi không muốn, thì không còn phải là chính tôi làm điều đó, nhưng là tội vẫn ở trong tôi. | εἰ δὲ ὃ οὐ ⸀θέλω τοῦτο ποιῶ, οὐκέτι ἐγὼ κατεργάζομαι αὐτὸ ἀλλὰ ἡ οἰκοῦσα ἐν ἐμοὶ ἁμαρτία. | Si autem quod nolo, illud facio: jam non ego operor illud, sed quod habitat in me, peccatum. | But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. |

| 22 | For I am delighted with the law of God, according to the inward man: | Theo con người nội tâm, tôi vui thích vì luật của Thiên Chúa; | συνήδομαι γὰρ τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ θεοῦ κατὰ τὸν ἔσω ἄνθρωπον, | condelector enim legi Dei secundum interiorem hominem: | For I delight in God’s law after the inward person, |
| 23 | But I see another law in my members, fighting against the law of my mind, and captivating me in the law of sin, that is in my members. | nhưng trong các chi thể của tôi, tôi lại thấy một luật khác: luật này chiến đấu chống lại luật của lý trí và giam hãm tôi trong luật của tội là luật vẫn nằm sãn trong các chi thể tôi. | βλέπω δὲ ἕτερον νόμον ἐν τοῖς μέλεσίν μου ἀντιστρατευόμενον τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ νοός μου καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζοντά με ⸀ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τῷ ὄντι ἐν τοῖς μέλεσίν μου. | video autem aliam legem in membris meis, repugnantem legi mentis meæ, et captivantem me in lege peccati, quæ est in membris meis. | but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. |
| 24 | Unhappy man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? | Tôi thật là một người khốn nạn! Ai sẽ giải thoát tôi khỏi thân xác phải chết này? | ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου; | Infelix ego homo, quis me liberabit de corpore mortis hujus? | What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? |
| 25 | The grace of God, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of sin. | Tạ ơn Thiên Chúa, nhờ Đức Giê-su Ki-tô, Chúa chúng ta! Như vậy, nếu theo lý trí, thì tôi làm nô lệ luật của Thiên Chúa; nhưng theo xác thịt, thì tôi làm nô lệ luật của tội. | ⸀χάρις τῷ θεῷ διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν. Ἄρα οὖν αὐτὸς ἐγὼ τῷ μὲν νοῒ δουλεύω νόμῳ θεοῦ, τῇ δὲ σαρκὶ νόμῳ ἁμαρτίας. | gratia Dei per Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum. Igitur ego ipse mente servio legi Dei: carne autem, legi peccati. | I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law. |
