What shall we say then that Abraham hath found, who is our father according to the flesh. | Vậy phải nói sao về ông Áp-ra-ham, tổ phụ dân tộc chúng tôi? Ông đã được gì? | What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. | For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice. | For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned according to grace, but according to debt. | Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
But to him that worketh not, yet believeth in him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reputed to justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God. | But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
As David also termeth the blessedness of a man, to whom God reputeth justice without works: | Đó là điều vua Đa-vít nói khi ca tụng hạnh phúc của người được Thiên Chúa kể là công chính mà không xét đến việc làm: | καθάπερ καὶ Δαυὶδ λέγει τὸν μακαρισμὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ᾧ ὁ θεὸς λογίζεται δικαιοσύνην χωρὶς ἔργων· | Sicut et David dicit beatitudinem hominis, cui Deus accepto fert justitiam sine operibus: | Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. | Μακάριοι ὧν ἀφέθησαν αἱ ἀνομίαι καὶ ὧν ἐπεκαλύφθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, | [Beati, quorum remissæ sunt iniquitates, et quorum tecta sunt peccata. | “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin. | Beatus vir, cui non imputavit Dominus peccatum.] | Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
This blessedness then, doth it remain in the circumcision only, or in the uncircumcision also? For we say that unto Abraham faith was reputed to justice. | Beatitudo ergo hæc in circumcisione tantum manet, an etiam in præputio? | Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
How then was it reputed? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. | πῶς οὖν ἐλογίσθη; ἐν περιτομῇ ὄντι ἢ ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ; οὐκ ἐν περιτομῇ ἀλλ’ ἐν ἀκροβυστίᾳ· | Quomodo ergo reputata est? in circumcisione, an in præputio? Non in circumcisione, sed in præputio. | How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the justice of the faith, which he had, being uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all them that believe, being uncircumcised, that unto them also it may be reputed to justice: | Ông nhận được phép cắt bì như dấu hiệu chứng thật rằng: nhờ tin mà ông được trở nên công chính, trước khi được cắt bì. Như vậy, ông là cha của mọi kẻ tin mà không được cắt bì, và vì tin nên được kể là công chính. | καὶ σημεῖον ἔλαβεν περιτομῆς, σφραγῖδα τῆς δικαιοσύνης τῆς πίστεως τῆς ἐν τῇ ἀκροβυστίᾳ, εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν πατέρα πάντων τῶν πιστευόντων δι’ ἀκροβυστίας, εἰς τὸ ⸀λογισθῆναι αὐτοῖς τὴν δικαιοσύνην, | Et signum accepit circumcisionis, signaculum justitiæ fidei, quæ est in præputio: ut sit pater omnium credentium per præputium, ut reputetur et illis ad justitiam: | He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
And might be the father of circumcision; not to them only, that are of the circumcision, but to them also that follow the steps of the faithful, that is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham. | He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
For not through the law was the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world; but through the justice of faith. | For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, the promise is made of no effect. | For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
For the law worketh wrath. For where there is no law, neither is there transgression. | Lex enim iram operatur. Ubi enim non est lex, nec prævaricatio. | For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
Therefore is it of faith, that according to grace the promise might be firm to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, | Bởi vậy, vì tin mà người ta được thừa hưởng lời Thiên Chúa hứa; như thế lời hứa là ân huệ Thiên Chúa ban không, và có giá trị cho toàn thể dòng dõi ông Áp-ra-ham, nghĩa là không phải chỉ cho những ai giữ Lề Luật, mà còn cho những ai có lòng tin như ông. Ông là tổ phụ chúng ta hết thảy, | Διὰ τοῦτο ἐκ πίστεως, ἵνα κατὰ χάριν, εἰς τὸ εἶναι βεβαίαν τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν παντὶ τῷ σπέρματι, οὐ τῷ ἐκ τοῦ νόμου μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ τῷ ἐκ πίστεως Ἀβραάμ (ὅς ἐστιν πατὴρ πάντων ἡμῶν, | Ideo ex fide, ut secundum gratiam firma sit promissio omni semini, non ei qui ex lege est solum, sed et ei qui ex fide est Abrahæ, qui pater est omnium nostrum | For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
(As it is written: I have made thee a father of many nations,) before God, whom he believed, who quickeneth the dead; and calleth those things that are not, as those that are. | καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι Πατέρα πολλῶν ἐθνῶν τέθεικά σε), κατέναντι οὗ ἐπίστευσεν θεοῦ τοῦ ζῳοποιοῦντος τοὺς νεκροὺς καὶ καλοῦντος τὰ μὴ ὄντα ὡς ὄντα· | (sicut scriptum est: Quia patrem multarum gentium posui te) ante Deum, cui credidit, qui vivificat mortuos, et vocat ea quæ non sunt, tamquam ea quæ sunt: | As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
Who against hope believed in hope; that he might be made the father of many nations, according to that which was said to him: So shall thy seed be. | Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
And he was not weak in faith; neither did he consider his own body now dead, whereas he was almost an hundred years old, nor the dead womb of Sara. | Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
In the promise also of God he staggered not by distrust; but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God: | Ông đã chẳng mất niềm tin, chẳng chút nghi ngờ lời Thiên Chúa hứa; trái lại, nhờ niềm tin, ông đã nên vững mạnh và tôn vinh Thiên Chúa, | εἰς δὲ τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ διεκρίθη τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ ἀλλὰ ἐνεδυναμώθη τῇ πίστει, δοὺς δόξαν τῷ θεῷ | In repromissione etiam Dei non hæsitavit diffidentia, sed confortatus est fide, dans gloriam Deo: | Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
Most fully knowing, that whatsoever he has promised, he is able also to perform. | and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
And therefore it was reputed to him unto justice. | Ideo et reputatum est illi ad justitiam. | Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
Now it is not written only for him, that it was reputed to him unto justice, | Nhưng khi viết ông được kể là người công chính, thì không phải chỉ nói về ông, | Οὐκ ἐγράφη δὲ δι’ αὐτὸν μόνον ὅτι ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ, | Non est autem scriptum tantum propter ipsum quia reputatum est illi ad justitiam: | Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
But also for us, to whom it shall be reputed, if we believe in him, that raised up Jesus Christ, our Lord, from the dead, | mà còn nói về cả chúng ta nữa: chúng ta sẽ được kể là công chính, vì tin vào Đấng đã làm cho Đức Giê-su, Chúa chúng ta, sống lại từ cõi chết; | ἀλλὰ καὶ δι’ ἡμᾶς οἷς μέλλει λογίζεσθαι, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἐπὶ τὸν ἐγείραντα Ἰησοῦν τὸν κύριον ἡμῶν ἐκ νεκρῶν, | sed et propter nos, quibus reputabitur credentibus in eum, qui suscitavit Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum a mortuis, | but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
Who was delivered up for our sins, and rose again for our justification. | who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.
