| 2 | That you may be mindful of those words which I told you before from the holy prophets, and of your apostles, of the precepts of the Lord and Saviour. | Anh em hãy nhớ lại những điều các thánh ngôn sứ đã nói trước kia, và điều răn của Chúa, Đấng Cứu Độ, mà các Tông Đồ của anh em đã truyền lại. | μνησθῆναι τῶν προειρημένων ῥημάτων ὑπὸ τῶν ἁγίων προφητῶν καὶ τῆς τῶν ἀποστόλων ὑμῶν ἐντολῆς τοῦ κυρίου καὶ σωτῆρος, | ut memores sitis eorum, quæ prædixi, verborum, a sanctis prophetis et apostolorum vestrorum, præceptorum Domini et Salvatoris. | that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, |
| 3 | Knowing this first, that in the last days there shall come deceitful scoffers, walking after their own lusts, | Trước tiên, anh em hãy biết điều này: trong những ngày sau hết, sẽ xuất hiện những kẻ nhạo báng chê cười, sống theo những đam mê riêng của họ. | τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες ὅτι ἐλεύσονται ἐπ’ ⸀ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν ⸂ἐν ἐμπαιγμονῇ⸃ ἐμπαῖκται κατὰ τὰς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας αὐτῶν πορευόμενοι | Hoc primum scientes, quod venient in novissimis diebus in deceptione illusores, juxta proprias concupiscentias ambulantes, | knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts |
| 4 | Saying: Where is his promise or his coming? for since the time that the fathers slept, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. | Họ nói: “Đâu rồi lời Người hứa sẽ quang lâm? Vì từ ngày các bậc cha ông an nghỉ, mọi sự vẫn y nguyên như khi trời đất mới được tạo thành.” | καὶ λέγοντες· Ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ ἐπαγγελία τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ; ἀφ’ ἧς γὰρ οἱ πατέρες ἐκοιμήθησαν, πάντα οὕτως διαμένει ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς κτίσεως. | dicentes: Ubi est promissio, aut adventus ejus? ex quo enim patres dormierunt, omnia sic perseverant ab initio creaturæ. | and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” |
| 5 | For this they are wilfully ignorant of, that the heavens were before, and the earth out of water, and through water, consisting by the word of God. | Thật vậy, họ không muốn biết rằng từ lâu đã có trời và đất, và đất từ nước mà ra và nhờ nước mà đứng vững do lời của Thiên Chúa. | λανθάνει γὰρ αὐτοὺς τοῦτο θέλοντας ὅτι οὐρανοὶ ἦσαν ἔκπαλαι καὶ γῆ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ δι’ ὕδατος συνεστῶσα τῷ τοῦ θεοῦ λόγῳ, | Latet enim eos hoc volentes, quod cæli erant prius, et terra de aqua, et per aquam consistens Dei verbo: | For they willfully forget that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water by the word of God, |
| 6 | Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. | Cũng vì các nguyên cớ ấy, thế gian thời đó đã tiêu vong trong cơn hồng thuỷ. | δι’ ὧν ὁ τότε κόσμος ὕδατι κατακλυσθεὶς ἀπώλετο· | per quæ, ille tunc mundus aqua inundatus, periit. | by which means the world that existed then, being overflowed with water, perished. |
| 7 | But the heavens and the earth which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of the ungodly men. | Còn trời và đất hiện nay, cũng chính lời ấy giữ lại, dành cho lửa trong ngày phán xét, ngày những kẻ vô luân phải diệt vong. | οἱ δὲ νῦν οὐρανοὶ καὶ ἡ γῆ τῷ ⸀αὐτῷ λόγῳ τεθησαυρισμένοι εἰσὶν πυρὶ τηρούμενοι εἰς ἡμέραν κρίσεως καὶ ἀπωλείας τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνθρώπων. | Cæli autem, qui nunc sunt, et terra eodem verbo repositi sunt, igni reservati in diem judicii, et perditionis impiorum hominum. | But the heavens that exist now and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. |
| 8 | But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | Anh em thân mến, một điều duy nhất, xin anh em đừng quên: đối với Chúa, một ngày ví thể ngàn năm, ngàn năm cũng tựa một ngày. | Ἓν δὲ τοῦτο μὴ λανθανέτω ὑμᾶς, ἀγαπητοί, ὅτι μία ἡμέρα παρὰ κυρίῳ ὡς χίλια ἔτη καὶ χίλια ἔτη ὡς ἡμέρα μία. | Unum vero hoc non lateat vos, carissimi, quia unus dies apud Dominum sicut mille anni, et mille anni sicut dies unus. | But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. |
| 9 | The Lord delayeth not his promise, as some imagine, but dealeth patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should return to penance. | Chúa không chậm trễ thực hiện lời hứa, như có kẻ cho là Người chậm trễ. Kỳ thực, Người kiên nhẫn đối với anh em, vì Người không muốn cho ai phải diệt vong, nhưng muốn cho mọi người đi tới chỗ ăn năn hối cải. | οὐ βραδύνει ⸀κύριος τῆς ἐπαγγελίας, ὥς τινες βραδύτητα ἡγοῦνται, ἀλλὰ μακροθυμεῖ εἰς ⸀ὑμᾶς, μὴ βουλόμενός τινας ἀπολέσθαι ἀλλὰ πάντας εἰς μετάνοιαν χωρῆσαι. | Non tardat Dominus promissionem suam, sicut quidam existimant: sed patienter agit propter vos, nolens aliquos perire, sed omnes ad pœnitentiam reverti. | The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance. |
| 10 | But the day of the Lord shall come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with great violence, and the elements shall be melted with heat, and the earth and the works which are in it, shall be burnt up. | Nhưng ngày của Chúa sẽ đến như kẻ trộm. Ngày đó, các tầng trời sẽ ầm ầm sụp đổ, ngũ hành bốc cháy tiêu tan, mặt đất và các công trình trên đó sẽ bị thiêu huỷ. | ἥξει δὲ ⸀ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς ⸀κλέπτης, ἐν ᾗ οἱ οὐρανοὶ ῥοιζηδὸν παρελεύσονται, στοιχεῖα δὲ καυσούμενα ⸀λυθήσεται, καὶ γῆ καὶ τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ ἔργα ⸀εὑρεθήσεται. | Adveniet autem dies Domini ut fur: in quo cæli magno impetu transient, elementa vero calore solventur, terra autem et quæ in ipsa sunt opera, exurentur. | But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat; and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. |
| 11 | Seeing then that all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of people ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness? | Muôn vật phải tiêu tan như thế, thì anh em phải là những người tốt dường nào, phải sống đạo đức và thánh thiện biết bao, | Τούτων ⸀οὕτως πάντων λυομένων ποταποὺς δεῖ ὑπάρχειν ὑμᾶς ἐν ἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαις, | Cum igitur hæc omnia dissolvenda sunt, quales oportet vos esse in sanctis conversationibus, et pietatibus, | Therefore, since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness, |
| 12 | Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of the Lord, by which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with the burning heat? | trong khi mong đợi ngày của Thiên Chúa và làm cho ngày đó mau đến, ngày mà các tầng trời sẽ bị thiêu huỷ và ngũ hành sẽ chảy tan ra trong lửa hồng. | προσδοκῶντας καὶ σπεύδοντας τὴν παρουσίαν τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμέρας, δι’ ἣν οὐρανοὶ πυρούμενοι λυθήσονται καὶ στοιχεῖα καυσούμενα τήκεται· | exspectantes, et properantes in adventum diei Domini, per quem cæli ardentes solventur, et elementa ignis ardore tabescent? | looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? |
| 13 | But we look for new heavens and a new earth according to his promises, in which justice dwelleth. | Nhưng, theo lời Thiên Chúa hứa, chúng ta mong đợi trời mới đất mới, nơi công lý ngự trị. | καινοὺς δὲ οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινὴν κατὰ τὸ ἐπάγγελμα αὐτοῦ προσδοκῶμεν, ἐν οἷς δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖ. | Novos vero cælos, et novam terram secundum promissa ipsius exspectamus, in quibus justitia habitat. | But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. |
| 14 | Wherefore, dearly beloved, waiting for these things, be diligent that you may be found before him unspotted and blameless in peace. | Vì thế, anh em thân mến, trong khi mong đợi ngày đó, anh em phải cố gắng sao cho Người thấy anh em tinh tuyền, không chi đáng trách và sống bình an. | Διό, ἀγαπητοί, ταῦτα προσδοκῶντες σπουδάσατε ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοι αὐτῷ εὑρεθῆναι ἐν εἰρήνῃ, | Propter quod, carissimi, hæc exspectantes, satagite immaculati, et inviolati ei inveniri in pace: | Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight. |
| 15 | And account the longsuffering of our Lord, salvation; as also our most dear brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: | Và anh em hãy biết rằng Chúa chúng ta tỏ lòng kiên nhẫn chính là để anh em được cứu độ, như ông Phao-lô, người anh em thân mến của chúng ta, đã viết cho anh em, theo ơn khôn ngoan Thiên Chúa đã ban cho ông. | καὶ τὴν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν μακροθυμίαν σωτηρίαν ἡγεῖσθε, καθὼς καὶ ὁ ἀγαπητὸς ἡμῶν ἀδελφὸς Παῦλος κατὰ τὴν ⸂δοθεῖσαν αὐτῷ⸃ σοφίαν ἔγραψεν ὑμῖν, | et Domini nostri longanimitatem, salutem arbitremini: sicut et carissimus frater noster Paulus secundum datam sibi sapientiam scripsit vobis, | Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you, |
| 16 | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | Ông cũng nói như vậy trong tất cả các thư của ông, khi bàn đến các vấn đề này. Trong các thư ấy, có những chỗ khó hiểu; những chỗ ấy cũng như những chỗ khác trong Kinh Thánh, bị những kẻ vô học và nông nổi xuyên tạc, khiến chúng phải chuốc lấy hoạ diệt vong. | ὡς καὶ ἐν πάσαις ⸀ταῖς ἐπιστολαῖς λαλῶν ἐν αὐταῖς περὶ τούτων, ἐν ⸀αἷς ἐστιν δυσνόητά τινα, ἃ οἱ ἀμαθεῖς καὶ ἀστήρικτοι στρεβλοῦσιν ὡς καὶ τὰς λοιπὰς γραφὰς πρὸς τὴν ἰδίαν αὐτῶν ἀπώλειαν. | sicut et omnibus epistolis, loquens in eis de his in quibus sunt quædam difficilia intellectu, quæ indocti et instabiles depravant, sicut et ceteras Scripturas, ad suam ipsorum perditionem. | as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. |
| 17 | You therefore, brethren, knowing these things before, take heed, lest being led aside by the error of the unwise, you fall from your own steadfastness. | Vậy, anh em thân mến, biết trước như thế, anh em hãy coi chừng kẻo bị những kẻ phạm pháp và lầm lạc lôi cuốn, mà không còn đứng vững nữa chăng. | ὑμεῖς οὖν, ἀγαπητοί, προγινώσκοντες φυλάσσεσθε ἵνα μὴ τῇ τῶν ἀθέσμων πλάνῃ συναπαχθέντες ἐκπέσητε τοῦ ἰδίου στηριγμοῦ, | Vos igitur fratres, præscientes custodite, ne insipientium errore traducti excidatis a propria firmitate: | You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. |
| 18 | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and unto the day of eternity. Amen. | Nhưng anh em hãy lớn lên trong ân sủng và trong sự hiểu biết Đức Giê-su Ki-tô là Chúa và là Đấng cứu độ chúng ta. Xin kính dâng Người vinh quang, bây giờ và cho đến muôn đời. A-men. | αὐξάνετε δὲ ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς ἡμέραν αἰῶνος. ⸀ἀμήν. | crescite vero in gratia, et in cognitione Domini nostri, et Salvatoris Jesu Christi. Ipsi gloria et nunc, et in diem æternitatis. Amen. | But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. |
