When thou shalt sit to eat with a prince, consider diligently what is set before thy face.Khi con ngồi ăn với kẻ có chức quyền,hãy để ý kỹ người đối diện.ἐὰν καθίσῃς δειπνεῖν ἐπὶ τραπέζης δυναστῶν, νοητῶς νόει τὰ παρατιθέμενά σοι,כִּֽי תֵ֭שֵׁב לִלְח֣וֹם אֶת מוֹשֵׁ֑ל בִּ֥ין תָּ֝בִ֗ין אֶת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְפָנֶֽיךָ[Quando sederis ut comedas cum principe, diligenter attende quæ apposita sunt ante faciem tuam.When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;
And put a knife to thy throat, if it be so that thou have thy soul in thy own power.Nếu con vốn tham ăn, hãy đặt dao kề cổ.καὶ ἐπίβαλλε τὴν χεῖρά σου, εἰδὼς ὅτι τοιαῦτά σε δεῖ παρασκευάσαι. Et statue cultrum in gutture tuo: si tamen habes in potestate animam tuam.put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.
Be not desirous of his meats, in which is the bread of deceit.Đừng thèm thuồng cao lương mỹ vị của hắn,vì đó là thứ đồ ăn phỉnh gạt.μὴ ἐπιθύμει τῶν ἐδεσμάτων αὐτοῦ· ταῦτα γὰρ ἔχεται ζωῆς ψευδοῦς. Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.
Labour not to be rich: but set bounds to thy prudence. Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.
Lift not up thy eyes to riches which thou canst not have: because they shall make themselves wings like those of an eagle, and shall fly towards heaven.mắt con vừa thấy, nó đã chẳng còn,vì nó mọc cánh bay đi mất,tựa đại bàng bay tới trời cao.ἐὰν ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν, οὐδαμοῦ πεσεῖται· κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτῷ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετοῦ, καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ προεστηκότος αὐτοῦ.התעוף הֲתָ֤עִיף עֵינֶ֥יךָ בּ֗וֹ וְֽאֵ֫ינֶ֥נּוּ כִּ֤י עָשֹׂ֣ה יַעֲשֶׂה לּ֣וֹ כְנָפַ֑יִם כְּ֝נֶ֗שֶׁר ועיף יָע֥וּף הַשָּׁמָֽיִםNe erigas oculos tuos ad opes quas non potes habere, quia facient sibi pennas quasi aquilæ, et volabunt in cælum.Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
Eat not with an envious man, and desire not his meats:Chớ ăn bánh của quân xấu bụng,đừng thèm thuồng cao lương mỹ vị của hắn.μὴ συνδείπνει ἀνδρὶ βασκάνῳ, μηδὲ ἐπιθύμει τῶν βρωμάτων αὐτοῦ·אַל תִּלְחַ֗ם אֶת לֶ֭חֶם רַ֣ע עָ֑יִן וְאַל תתאו תִּ֝תְאָ֗יו לְמַטְעַמֹּתָֽיוNe comedas cum homine invido, et ne desideres cibos ejus:Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies,
Because like a soothsayer, and diviner, he thinketh that which he knoweth not. Eat and drink, will he say to thee: and his mind is not with thee.Vì lòng hắn nghĩ sao, con người hắn như vậy.Hắn mời con: “Ăn uống đi nào!”Nhưng đâu phải hắn có lòng với con.ὃν τρόπον γὰρ εἴ τις καταπίοι τρίχα, οὕτως ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει. Comede et bibe, dicet tibi; et mens ejus non est tecum.for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
The meats which thou hadst eaten, thou shalt vomit up: and shalt loose thy beautiful words.Mẩu bánh vừa nuốt vào, con đã phải thổ ra.Mất công toi bao nhiêu lời tốt đẹp,ἐξεμέσει γὰρ αὐτὸν καὶ λυμανεῖται τοὺς λόγους σου τοὺς καλούς. Cibos quos comederas evomes, et perdes pulchros sermones tuos.You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.
Speak not in the ears of fools: because they will despise the instruction of thy speech.con đừng nói vào tai đứa dốt,vì nó sẽ khinh dể lời lẽ khôn ngoan của con.εἰς ὦτα ἄφρονος μηδὲν λέγε, μή ποτε μυκτηρίσῃ τοὺς συνετοὺς λόγους σου. In auribus insipientium ne loquaris, qui despicient doctrinam eloquii tui.Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:Con chớ chuyển dời đường ranh cũ,cũng đừng xâm phạm cánh đồng của trẻ mồ côi,μὴ μεταθῇς ὅρια αἰώνια, εἰς δὲ κτῆμα ὀρφανῶν μὴ εἰσέλθῃς·אַל תַּ֭סֵּג גְּב֣וּל עוֹלָ֑ם וּבִשְׂדֵ֥י יְ֝תוֹמִ֗ים אַל תָּבֹֽא Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.vì Đấng cứu chuộc chúng là Đấng hùng mạnh,chính Người sẽ biện hộ cho chúng chống lại con.ὁ γὰρ λυτρούμενος αὐτοὺς Κύριος· κραταιός ἐστιν, καὶ κρινεῖ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτῶν μετὰ σοῦ.כִּֽי גֹאֲלָ֥ם חָזָ֑ק הֽוּא יָרִ֖יב אֶת רִיבָ֣ם אִתָּֽךְpropinquus enim illorum fortis est, et ipse judicabit contra te causam illorum.]for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.
Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge. Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.Đừng ngại gì khi phải phạt trẻ con,nếu con đánh nó bằng roi, nó đâu có chết.μὴ ἀπόσχῃ νήπιον παιδεύειν, ὅτι ἐὰν πατάξῃς αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ·אַל תִּמְנַ֣ע מִנַּ֣עַר מוּסָ֑ר כִּֽי תַכֶּ֥נּוּ בַ֝שֵּׁ֗בֶט לֹ֣א יָמֽוּתNoli subtrahere a puero disciplinam: si enim percusseris eum virga, non morietur.Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.Lấy roi đánh nó là cứu nó khỏi âm ty.σὺ μὲν γὰρ πατάξεις αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐκ θανάτου ῥύσῃ. Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol.
My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:Hỡi con, tâm trí con khôn ngoanthì lòng dạ thầy cũng vui sướng.υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὴ γένηταί σου ἡ καρδία, εὐφρανεῖς καὶ τὴν ἐμὴν καρδίαν,בְּ֭נִי אִם חָכַ֣ם לִבֶּ֑ךָ יִשְׂמַ֖ח לִבִּ֣י גַם אָֽנִיFili mi, si sapiens fuerit animus tuus, gaudebit tecum cor meum:My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.
And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.Môi miệng con nói những lời chính trựcthì tâm hồn thầy sẽ mừng rỡ hân hoan.καὶ ἐνδιατρίψει λόγοις τὰ σὰ χείλη πρὸς τὰ ἐμὰ χείλη, ἐὰν ὀρθὰ ὦσιν.וְתַעְלֹ֥זְנָה כִלְיוֹתָ֑י בְּדַבֵּ֥ר שְׂ֝פָתֶ֗יךָ מֵישָׁרִֽיםet exsultabunt renes mei, cum locuta fuerint rectum labia tua.Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:Đừng để lòng con phân bì với quân tội lỗi,nhưng hãy luôn kính sợ ĐỨC CHÚA,μὴ ζηλούτω ἡ καρδία σου ἁμαρτωλούς, ἀλλὰ ἐν φόβῳ Κυρίου ἴσθι ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν. Non æmuletur cor tuum peccatores, sed in timore Domini esto tota die:Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear the LORD all day long.
Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.vì chắc chắn con có một tương laivà niềm hy vọng của con sẽ không thành mây khói.ἐὰν γὰρ τηρήσῃς αὐτά, ἔσται σοι ἔκγονα, ἡ δὲ ἐλπίς σου οὐκ ἀποστήσεται.כִּ֭י אִם יֵ֣שׁ אַחֲרִ֑ית וְ֝תִקְוָתְךָ֗ לֹ֣א תִכָּרֵֽתquia habebis spem in novissimo, et præstolatio tua non auferetur.Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.Hỡi con, hãy nghe thầy và con sẽ nên khôn,hãy hướng lòng con theo chính đạo.ἄκουε, υἱέ, καὶ σοφὸς γενοῦ, καὶ κατεύθυνε ἐννοίας σῆς καρδίας. Audi, fili mi, et esto sapiens, et dirige in via animum tuum.Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!
Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:Đừng nhập bọn với quân chè chén say sưa,với những kẻ chỉ mê ăn mê nhậu.μὴ ἴσθι οἰνοπότης, μηδὲ ἐκτείνου συμβολαῖς, κρεῶν ἀγορασμοῖς·אַל תְּהִ֥י בְסֹֽבְאֵי יָ֑יִן בְּזֹלֲלֵ֖י בָשָׂ֣ר לָֽמוֹNoli esse in conviviis potatorum, nec in comessationibus eorum qui carnes ad vescendum conferunt:Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;
Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.Bởi vì kẻ say sưa ăn nhậu ắt sẽ phải túng nghèo;kẻ mơ màng buồn ngủ sẽ khố rách áo ôm.πᾶς γὰρ μέθυσος καὶ πορνοκόπος πτωχεύσει, καὶ ἐνδύσεται διερρηγμένα καὶ ῥακώδη πᾶς ὑπνώδης.כִּי סֹבֵ֣א וְ֭זוֹלֵל יִוָּרֵ֑שׁ וּ֝קְרָעִ֗ים תַּלְבִּ֥ישׁ נוּמָֽהquia vacantes potibus et dantes symbola consumentur, et vestietur pannis dormitatio.for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.Hãy lắng nghe cha con, đấng sinh thành ra con,đừng khinh dể mẹ con khi người già yếu.ἄκουε, υἱέ, πατρὸς τοῦ γεννήσαντός σε, καὶ μὴ καταφρόνει ὅτι γεγήρακέν σου ἡ μήτηρ. Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.
Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Veritatem eme, et noli vendere sapientiam, et doctrinam, et intelligentiam.Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.
The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him. Exsultat gaudio pater justi; qui sapientem genuit, lætabitur in eo.The father of the righteous has great joy. 25Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.Ước gì cha mẹ con được hỷ hoanvà người sinh ra con được mừng rỡ.εὐφραινέσθω ὁ πατὴρ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ ἐπὶ σοί, καὶ χαιρέτω ἡ τεκοῦσά σε. Gaudeat pater tuus et mater tua, et exsultet quæ genuit te.Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!
My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.Hỡi con, hãy hết lòng tin tưởng vào thầyvà hãy để mắt noi gương thầy.δός μοι, υἱέ, σὴν καρδίαν· οἱ δὲ σοὶ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἐμὰς ὁδοὺς τηρείτωσαν. Præbe, fili mi, cor tuum mihi, et oculi tui vias meas custodiant.My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.
For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.Vì gái điếm là hố sâuvà phụ nữ ngoại tình là giếng hẹp.πίθος γὰρ τετρημένος ἐστὶν ἀλλότριος οἶκος καὶ φρέαρ στενὸν ἀλλότριον. For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.Nó khác nào kẻ cướp rình chờhòng tăng số những kẻ bất trung trong nhân loại.οὗτος γὰρ συντόμως ἀπολεῖται, καὶ πᾶς παράνομος ἀναλωθήσεται. Insidiatur in via quasi latro, et quos incautos viderit, interficiet.]Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.
Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?Ai kêu: “Than ôi!”? Ai kêu: “Khổ quá!”?Ai cứ gây gổ? Ai phải thở than? Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.Đó là kẻ nấn ná mãi bên ly rượu,là người đã nếm đủ thứ rượu ngon.οὐ τῶν ἐνχρονιζόντων ἐν οἴνοις; οὐ τῶν ἰχνευόντων ποῦ πότοι γίνονται;לַֽמְאַחֲרִ֥ים עַל הַיָּ֑יִן לַ֝בָּאִ֗ים לַחְקֹ֥ר מִמְסָֽךְnonne his qui commorantur in vino, et student calicibus epotandis?Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.
Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,Nhìn rượu làm chi: rượu màu đỏ hồng,óng ánh trong ly, rồi trôi xuống cổ.μὴ μεθύσκεσθε ἐν οἴνοις, ἀλλὰ ὁμιλεῖτε ἀνθρώποις δικαίοις, καὶ ὁμιλεῖτε ἐν περιπάτοις· ἐὰν γὰρ εἰς τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὰ ποτήρια δῷς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου, ὕστερον περιπατήσεις γυμνότερος ὑπέρου·אַל תֵּ֥רֶא יַיִן֮ כִּ֪י יִתְאַ֫דָּ֥ם כִּֽי יִתֵּ֣ן בכיס בַּכּ֣וֹס עֵינ֑וֹ יִ֝תְהַלֵּ֗ךְ בְּמֵישָׁרִֽיםNe intuearis vinum quando flavescit, cum splenduerit in vitro color ejus: ingreditur blande,Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.
But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk. אַ֭חֲרִיתוֹ כְּנָחָ֣שׁ יִשָּׁ֑ךְ וּֽכְצִפְעֹנִ֥י יַפְרִֽשׁsed in novissimo mordebit ut coluber, et sicut regulus venena diffundet.In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.
Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.Mắt con sẽ thấy những điều kỳ dị,lòng con tuôn ra bao chuyện nhảm nhí.οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὅταν ἴδωσιν ἀλλοτρίαν, τὸ στόμα σου τότε λαλήσει σκολιά,עֵ֭ינֶיךָ יִרְא֣וּ זָר֑וֹת וְ֝לִבְּךָ֗ יְדַבֵּ֥ר תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹתOculi tui videbunt extraneas, et cor tuum loquetur perversa.Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.
And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep, when the stern is lost. וְ֭הָיִיתָ כְּשֹׁכֵ֣ב בְּלֶב יָ֑ם וּ֝כְשֹׁכֵ֗ב בְּרֹ֣אשׁ חִבֵּֽלEt eris sicut dormiens in medio mari, et quasi sopitus gubernator, amisso clavo.Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake, and find wine again?“Bị người đánh, tôi chẳng biết đau,bị người đập, tôi đâu cảm thấy.Đến bao giờ mới tỉnh rượu đâyđể tôi lại kiếm thêm ly nữa?”ἐρεῖς δέ Τύπτουσίν με καὶ οὐκ ἐπόνεσα, καὶ ἐνέπαιξάν μοι, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ᾔδειν· πότε ὄρθρος ἔσται, ἵνα ἐλθὼν ζητήσω μεθ᾽ ὧν συνελεύσομαι;הִכּ֥וּנִי בַל חָלִיתִי֮ הֲלָמ֗וּנִי בַּל יָ֫דָ֥עְתִּי מָתַ֥י אָקִ֑יץ א֝וֹסִ֗יף אֲבַקְשֶׁ֥נּוּ עֽוֹדEt dices: Verberaverunt me, sed non dolui; traxerunt me, et ego non sensi.
