Man born of a woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.Con người do phụ nữ sinh ra,tuổi đời ngắn ngủi, mà âu lo chồng chất.βροτὸς γὰρ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος καὶ πλήρης ὀργῆς,אָ֭דָם יְל֣וּד אִשָּׁ֑ה קְצַ֥ר יָ֝מִ֗ים וּֽשְׂבַֽע רֹֽגֶז[Homo natus de muliere, brevi vivens tempore, repletur multis miseriis.“Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.
Who cometh forth like a flower, and is destroyed, and fleeth as a shadow, and never continueth in the same state.Tựa đoá hoa mới nở đã tàn,con người qua mau, khác nào bóng câu qua cửa sổ,ἢ ὥσπερ ἄνθος ἀνθῆσαν ἐξέπεσεν, ἀπέδρα δὲ ὥσπερ σκιὰ καὶ οὐ μὴ στῇ.כְּצִ֣יץ יָ֭צָא וַיִּמָּ֑ל וַיִּבְרַ֥ח כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֽוֹדQui quasi flos egreditur et conteritur, et fugit velut umbra, et numquam in eodem statu permanet. He grows up like a flower, and is cut down. He also flees like a shadow, and doesn’t continue.
And dost thou think it meet to open thy eyes upon such an one, and to bring him into judgment with thee?thế mà Ngài lại để mắt nhìn xem,còn bắt ra đối chất với Ngài.οὐχὶ καὶ τούτου λόγον ἐποιήσω, καὶ τοῦτον ἐποίησας εἰσελθεῖν ἐν κρίματι ἐνώπιόν σου;אַף עַל זֶ֭ה פָּקַ֣חְתָּ עֵינֶ֑ךָ וְאֹ֘תִ֤י תָבִ֖יא בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט עִמָּֽךְEt dignum ducis super hujuscemodi aperire oculos tuos, et adducere eum tecum in judicium?Do you open your eyes on such a one, and bring me into judgment with you?
Who can make him clean that is conceived of unclean seed? is it not thou who only art? Quis potest facere mundum de immundo conceptum semine? nonne tu qui solus es?Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.
The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with thee: thou hast appointed his bounds which cannot be passed.Vì tuổi con người đã được Ngài ấn định,sống được bao năm tháng là tuỳ thuộc ở Ngài. Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass.
Depart a little from him, that he may rest, until his wished for day come, as that of the hireling.Xin Ngài đừng để ý đến con người nữa,cho nó được an nhàn thư thái, và phấn khởi mừng vuinhư người làm mướn xong được một ngày.ἀπόστα ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἵνα ἡσυχάσῃ καὶ εὐδοκήσῃ τὸν βίον, ὥσπερ ὁ μισθωτός. Look away from him, that he may rest, until he accomplishes, as a hireling, his day.
A tree hath hope: if it be cut, it groweth green again, and the boughs thereof sprout.Quả vậy, đến như cây cối mà vẫn còn có niềm hy vọng,bị chặt rồi, còn có thể mọc lại xanh tươi,và không ngớt đâm chồi nảy lộc,ἔστιν γὰρ δένδρῳ ἐλπίς· ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκκοπῇ, ἔτι ἐπανθήσει, καὶ ὁ ῥάδαμνος αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ ἐκλείπῃ·כִּ֤י יֵ֥שׁ לָעֵ֗ץ תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה אִֽם יִ֭כָּרֵת וְע֣וֹד יַחֲלִ֑יף וְ֝יֹֽנַקְתּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תֶחְדָּֽלLignum habet spem: si præcisum fuerit, rursum virescit, et rami ejus pullulant.“For there is hope for a tree if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, that the tender branch of it will not cease.
If its root be old in the earth, and its stock be dead in the dust:dầu cho dưới đất rễ cây có giàvà gốc cây nằm chết trong cát bụi,ἐὰν γὰρ γηράσῃ ἐν γῇ ἡ ῥίζα αὐτοῦ, ἐν δὲ πέτρᾳ τελευτήσῃ τὸ στέλεχος αὐτοῦ,אִם יַזְקִ֣ין בָּאָ֣רֶץ שָׁרְשׁ֑וֹ וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר יָמ֥וּת גִּזְעֽוֹSi senuerit in terra radix ejus, et in pulvere emortuus fuerit truncus illius,Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stock dies in the ground,
At the scent of water, it shall spring, and bring forth leaves, as when it was first planted.chỉ cần một ít nước là đã vội đâm chồi,nhánh vươn dài như một cây non.ἀπὸ ὀσμῆς ὕδατος ἀνθήσει, ποιήσει δὲ θερισμὸν ὥσπερ νεόφυτον.מֵרֵ֣יחַ מַ֣יִם יַפְרִ֑חַ וְעָשָׂ֖ה קָצִ֣יר כְּמוֹ נָֽטַעad odorem aquæ germinabit, et faciet comam, quasi cum primum plantatum est.yet through the scent of water it will bud, and sprout boughs like a plant.
But man when he shall be dead, and stripped and consumed, I pray you where is he?Còn con người chết là nằm bất động,sẽ ở đâu khi tắt thở rồi?ἀνὴρ δὲ τελευτήσας ᾤχετο, πεσὼν δὲ βροτὸς οὐκέτι ἐστίν. But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?
As if the waters should depart out of the sea, and an emptied river should be dried up:Nước biển có thể biến mất, sông ngòi có thể cạn khô,χρόνῳ γὰρ σπανίζεται θάλασσα, ποταμὸς δὲ ἐρημωθεὶς ἐξηράνθη. Quomodo si recedant aquæ de mari, et fluvius vacuefactus arescat:As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up,
So man when he is fallen asleep shall not rise again; till the heavens be broken, he shall not awake, nor rise up out of his sleep.cũng thế, con người nằm xuống ngủ yên rồilà không thức dậy nữa. וְאִ֥ישׁ שָׁכַ֗ב וְֽלֹא יָ֫ק֥וּם עַד בִּלְתִּ֣י שָׁ֭מַיִם לֹ֣א יָקִ֑יצוּ וְלֹֽא יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ מִשְּׁנָתָֽםsic homo, cum dormierit, non resurget: donec atteratur cælum, non evigilabit, nec consurget de somno suo.so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.
Who will grant me this, that thou mayst protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a. time when thou wilt remember me?Ôi, giả như Ngài giấu con trong âm phủ,cất con ở đó cho đến lúc cơn giận Ngài nguôi,cho con một thời hạn, rồi lại nhớ đến con?εἰ γὰρ ὄφελον ἐν ᾅδῃ με ἐφύλαξας, ἔκρυψας δέ με ἕως ἂν παύσηταί σου ἡ ὀργή, καὶ τάξῃ μοι χρόνον ἐν ᾧ μνείαν μου ποιήσῃ. Quis mihi hoc tribuat, ut in inferno protegas me, et abscondas me donec pertranseat furor tuus, et constituas mihi tempus in quo recorderis mei?“Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time and remember me!
Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come.–vì đã chết rồi, làm sao con người sống lại được?–Trong suốt cả thời gian khổ dịchcon vẫn cứ đợi chờ, cho tới khi Ngài nâng con dậy.ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος, ζήσεται, συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ· ὑπομενῶ ἕως πάλιν γένωμαι. If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.
Thou shalt call me, and I will answer thee: to the work of thy hands thou shalt reach out thy right hand.Bấy giờ Ngài gọi, con sẽ xin thưa.Bởi vì Ngài những khát khao mòn mỏinhìn thấy công trình do tay Ngài làm nên.εἶτα καλέσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι, τὰ δὲ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου μὴ ἀποποιοῦ. Vocabis me, et ego respondebo tibi: operi manuum tuarum porriges dexteram. You would call, and I would answer you. You would have a desire for the work of your hands.
Thou indeed hast numbered my steps, but spare my sins.Bây giờ Ngài đếm từng bước con đi,nhưng lúc ấy, Ngài sẽ không còn quan tâm đến tội con nữa.ἠρίθμησας δέ μου τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα, καὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ σε οὐδὲν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου·כִּֽי עַ֭תָּה צְעָדַ֣י תִּסְפּ֑וֹר לֹֽא תִ֝שְׁמ֗וֹר עַל חַטָּאתִֽיTu quidem gressus meos dinumerasti: sed parce peccatis meis. But now you count my steps. Don’t you watch over my sin?
Thou hast sealed up my offences as it were in a bag, but hast cured my iniquity.Lúc ấy, tội ác con, Ngài sẽ niêm trong bọc,lỗi lầm con, Ngài sẽ phủ lấp đi.ἐσφράγισας δέ μου τὰς ἀνομίας ἐν βαλλαντίῳ, ἐπεσημήνω δὲ εἴ τι ἄκων παρέβην. Signasti quasi in sacculo delicta mea, sed curasti iniquitatem meam.My disobedience is sealed up in a bag. You fasten up my iniquity.
A mountain falling cometh to nought, and a rock is removed out of its place.Than ôi! Mons cadens defluit, et saxum transfertur de loco suo:“But the mountain falling comes to nothing. The rock is removed out of its place.
Waters wear away the stones, and with inundation the ground by little and little is washed away: so in like manner thou shalt destroy man.chẳng khác chi nước chảy đá mòn, và mưa rào cuốn trôi cát bụi,cũng vậy, hy vọng của người phàm, Ngài làm tiêu tan hết.λίθους ἐλέαναν ὕδατα, καὶ κατέκλυσεν ὕδατα ὕπτια τοῦ χώματος τῆς γῆς· καὶ ὑπομονὴν ἀνθρώπου ἀπώλεσας. The waters wear the stones. The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth. So you destroy the hope of man.
Thou hast strengthened him for a little while, that he may pass away for ever: thou shalt change his face, and shalt send him away.Ngài quật cho nó ngã không dậy được, và nó phải ra đi,Ngài làm cho mặt mày nó ra xấu xa ghê tởm,rồi Ngài đuổi nó đi.ὦσας αὐτὸν εἰς τέλος, καὶ ᾤχετο· ἐπέστησας αὐτῷ τὸ πρόσωπον, καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας·תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ לָ֭נֶצַח וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה פָ֝נָ֗יו וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּRoborasti eum paululum, ut in perpetuum transiret: immutabis faciem ejus, et emittes eum.You forever prevail against him, and he departs. You change his face, and send him away.
Whether his children come to honour or dishonour, he shall not understand. Sive nobiles fuerint filii ejus, sive ignobiles, non intelliget. His sons come to honor, and he doesn’t know it. They are brought low, but he doesn’t perceive it of them.
But yet his flesh, while he shall live, shall have pain, and his soul shall mourn over him.Đau đớn trong thân xác, duy một mình nó chịu,tang tóc trong tâm hồn, chỉ một mình nó hay.ἀλλ᾽ ἢ αἱ σάρκες αὐτοῦ ἤλγησαν, ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπένθησεν. Attamen caro ejus, dum vivet, dolebit, et anima illius super semetipso lugebit.]But his flesh on him has pain, and his soul within him mourns.”
