Dying flies spoil the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a small and shortlived folly.Một con ruồi chết làm thối cả bình dầu thơm;một chút ngu si gây phương hạicho cả khôn ngoan và danh giá.μυῖαι θανατοῦσαι σαπριοῦσιν σκευασίαν, ἔλαιον ἡδύσματος· τίμιον ὁ λόγος σοφίας ὑπὲρ δόξαν ἀφροσύνης μεγάλης. Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to produce an evil odor; so does a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.
The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a fool is in his left hand.Lòng người khôn hướng theo lẽ phải,tâm người dại ngả về đường trái.καρδία σοφοῦ εἰς δεξιὸν αὐτοῦ. Cor sapientis in dextera ejus, et cor stulti in sinistra illius.A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left.
Yea, and the fool when he walketh in the way, whereas be himself is a fool, esteemeth all men fools.Cả ngoài đường, đứa ngu cũng vẫn khờ khạo, nó đi bảo với mọi người chính mình là thằng ngu.καί γε ἐν ὁδῷ ὅταν ἄφρων πορεύηται, καρδία αὐτοῦ ὑστερήσει καὶ ἃ λογιεῖται πάντα ἀφροσύνη ἐστίν.וְגַם בַּדֶּ֛רֶךְ כשהסכל כְּשֶׁסָּכָ֥ל הֹלֵ֖ךְ לִבּ֣וֹ חָסֵ֑ר וְאָמַ֥ר לַכֹּ֖ל סָכָ֥ל הֽוּאSed et in via stultus ambulans, cum ipse insipiens sit, omnes stultos æstimat.Yes also when the fool walks by the way, his understanding fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.
If the spirit of him that hath power, ascend upon thee, leave not thy place: because care will make the greatest sins to cease.Nếu người trên có đùng đùng nổi giận, bạn cũng chớ bỏ đi, vì thái độ bình tĩnh giúp tránh được biết bao lỗi lầm.ἐὰν πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐξουσιάζοντος ἀναβῇ ἐπὶ σέ, τόπον σου μὴ ἀφῇς, ὅτι ἴαμα καταπαύσει ἁμαρτίας μεγάλας.אִם ר֤וּחַ הַמּוֹשֵׁל֙ תַּעֲלֶ֣ה עָלֶ֔יךָ מְקוֹמְךָ֖ אַל תַּנַּ֑ח כִּ֣י מַרְפֵּ֔א יַנִּ֖יחַ חֲטָאִ֥ים גְּדוֹלִֽיםSi spiritus potestatem habentis ascenderit super te, locum tuum ne demiseris, quia curatio faciet cessare peccata maxima.]If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, don’t leave your place; for gentleness lays great offenses to rest.
There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were by an error proceeding from the face of the prince:Tôi cũng thấy một mối hoạ dưới ánh mặt trời, một sai lầm mà người lãnh đạo không nhận ra.ἔστιν πονηρία ἣν ἴδον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον, ὡς ἀκούσιον ἐξῆλθεν ἀπὸ προσώπου ἐξουσιάζοντος.יֵ֣שׁ רָעָ֔ה רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ כִּשְׁגָגָ֕ה שֶׁיֹּצָ֖א מִלִּפְנֵ֥י הַשַּׁלִּֽיט[Est malum quod vidi sub sole, quasi per errorem egrediens a facie principis:There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, the sort of error which proceeds from the ruler.
A fool set in high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath.Đó là: đứa ngu si được nâng lên địa vị rất cao sang, còn người phú quý lại ở vị trí thấp hèn.ἐδόθη ὁ ἄφρων ἐν ὕψεσι μεγάλοις, καὶ πλούσιοι ἐν ταπεινῷ καθήσονται·נִתַּ֣ן הַסֶּ֔כֶל בַּמְּרוֹמִ֖ים רַבִּ֑ים וַעֲשִׁירִ֖ים בַּשֵּׁ֥פֶל יֵשֵֽׁבוּpositum stultum in dignitate sublimi, et divites sedere deorsum.Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
I have seen servants upon horses: and princes walking on the ground as servants.Tôi thấy hạng đầy tớ chễm chệ trên lưng ngựa, trong khi bậc quan quyền phải đi bộ như hạng đầy tớ.ἴδον δούλους ἐφ᾽ ἵππους καὶ ἄρχοντας πορευομένους ὡς δούλους ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. Vidi servos in equis, et principes ambulantes super terram quasi servos.I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking like servants on the earth.
He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.Người đào hố có thể rơi xuống hố,kẻ phá tường e bị rắn cắn cho,ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον εἰς αὐτὸν ἐμπεσεῖται, καὶ καθαιροῦντα φραγμόν, δήξεται αὐτὸν ὄφις·חֹפֵ֥ר גּוּמָּ֖ץ בּ֣וֹ יִפּ֑וֹל וּפֹרֵ֥ץ גָּדֵ֖ר יִשְּׁכֶ֥נּוּ נָחָֽשׁQui fodit foveam incidet in eam, et qui dissipat sepem mordebit eum coluber. He who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.
He that removeth stones, shall be hurt by them: and he that cutteth trees, shall be wounded by them.người lấy đá có ngày bị thương tích,kẻ đốn cây chắc sẽ gặp hiểm nguy.ἐξαίρων λίθους διαπονηθήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς, σχίζων ξύλα κινδυνεύσει ἐν αὐτοῖς.מַסִּ֣יעַ אֲבָנִ֔ים יֵעָצֵ֖ב בָּהֶ֑ם בּוֹקֵ֥עַ עֵצִ֖ים יִסָּ֥כֶן בָּֽםQui transfert lapides affligetur in eis, et qui scindit ligna vulnerabitur ab eis.Whoever carves out stones may be injured by them. Whoever splits wood may be endangered by it.
If the iron be blunt, and be not as before, but be made blunt, with much labour it shall be sharpened: and after industry shall follow wisdom.Lưỡi dao đã cùn mà không biết mài cho bén, thì phải dùng sức gấp đôi; nhưng khôn ngoan hiểu biết thì thật có lợi.ἐὰν ἐκπέσῃ τὸ σιδήριον, καὶ αὐτὸς πρόσωπον ἐτάραξεν· καὶ δυνάμεις δυναμώσει, καὶ περισσεία τῷ ἀνδρὶ οὐ σοφία·אִם קֵהָ֣ה הַבַּרְזֶ֗ל וְהוּא֙ לֹא פָנִ֣ים קִלְקַ֔ל וַחֲיָלִ֖ים יְגַבֵּ֑ר וְיִתְר֥וֹן הכשיר הַכְשֵׁ֖ר חָכְמָֽהSi retusum fuerit ferrum, et hoc non ut prius, sed hebetatum fuerit, multo labore exacuetur, et post industriam sequetur sapientia. If the ax is blunt, and one doesn’t sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but skill brings success.
If a serpent bite in silence, he is nothing better that backbiteth secretly.Làm thầy dụ rắn mà không đủ cao tay, để cho rắn cắn, thì nào được lợi lộc gì!ἐὰν δάκῃ ὄφις ἐν οὐ ψιθυρισμῷ, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν περισσεία τῷ ἐπᾴδοντι.אִם יִשֹּׁ֥ךְ הַנָּחָ֖שׁ בְּלוֹא לָ֑חַשׁ וְאֵ֣ין יִתְר֔וֹן לְבַ֖עַל הַלָּשֽׁוֹןSi mordeat serpens in silentio, nihil eo minus habet qui occulte detrahit. If the snake bites before it is charmed, then is there no profit for the charmer’s tongue.
The words of the mouth of a wise man are grace: but the lips of a fool shall throw him down headlong. Verba oris sapientis gratia, et labia insipientis præcipitabunt eum;The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.
The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is a mischievous error.nó mở đầu câu chuyện với những lời ngu xuẩn,và kết thúc bằng những lời gian ác ngông cuồng;ἀρχὴ λόγων στόματος αὐτοῦ ἀφροσύνη, καὶ ἐσχάτη αὐτοῦ περιφέρεια πονηρά·תְּחִלַּ֥ת דִּבְרֵי פִ֖יהוּ סִכְל֑וּת וְאַחֲרִ֣ית פִּ֔יהוּ הוֹלֵל֖וּת רָעָֽהinitium verborum ejus stultitia, et novissimum oris illius error pessimus. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
A fool multiplieth words. A man cannot tell what hath been before him: and what shall be after him, who can tell him?nó toàn nói chuyện huyên thuyên.Con người đâu biết được điều gì sẽ xảy đến,và ai tỏ cho nó hay sẽ có chuyện gì sau khi nó chết?καὶ ὁ ἄφρων πληθύνει λόγους. A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn’t know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?
The labour of fools shall afflict them that know not bow to go to the city. Labor stultorum affliget eos, qui nesciunt in urbem pergere.]The labor of fools wearies every one of them; for he doesn’t know how to go to the city.
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and when the princes eat in the morning. Woe to you, land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in the morning!
Blessed is the land, whose king is noble, and whose princes eat in due season for refreshment, and not for riotousness. אַשְׁרֵ֣יךְ אֶ֔רֶץ שֶׁמַּלְכֵּ֖ךְ בֶּן חוֹרִ֑ים וְשָׂרַ֨יִךְ֙ בָּעֵ֣ת יֹאכֵ֔לוּ בִּגְבוּרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א בַשְּׁתִֽיBeata terra cujus rex nobilis est, et cujus principes vescuntur in tempore suo, ad reficiendum, et non ad luxuriam.Happy are you, land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
By slothfulness a building shall be brought down, and through the weakness of hands, the house shall drop through.Lười lĩnh biếng nhác thì cột xiêu,bàn tay uể oải thì nhà dột.ἐν ὀκνηρίαις ταπεινωθήσεται ἡ δόκωσις, καὶ ἐν ἀργείᾳ χειρῶν στάξει ἡ οἰκία. In pigritiis humiliabitur contignatio, et in infirmitate manuum perstillabit domus.By slothfulness the roof sinks in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.
For laughter they make bread, and wine that the living may feast: and all things obey money. לִשְׂחוֹק֙ עֹשִׂ֣ים לֶ֔חֶם וְיַ֖יִן יְשַׂמַּ֣ח חַיִּ֑ים וְהַכֶּ֖סֶף יַעֲנֶ֥ה אֶת הַכֹּֽלIn risum faciunt panem et vinum ut epulentur viventes; et pecuniæ obediunt omnia.A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes the life glad; and money is the answer for all things.
Detract not the king, no not in thy thought; and speak not evil of the rich man in thy private chamber: because even the birds of the air will carry thy voice, and he that hath wings will tell what thou hast said.Dù chỉ là trong tư tưởng,bạn cũng đừng nguyền rủa nhà vua;dù là trong phòng ngủ, cũng chớ nguyền rủa người giàu có,vì chim trời có thể đưa tiếng đi thật xa,và loài có cánh sẽ đem lời thuật lại.καί γε ἐν συνειδήσει σου βασιλέα μὴ καταράσῃ, καὶ ἐν ταμείοις κοιτώνων σου μὴ καταράσῃ πλούσιον· ὅτι πετεινὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀποίσει σου τὴν φωνήν, καὶ ὁ τὰς πτέρυγας ἀπαγγελεῖ λόγον σου. In cogitatione tua regi ne detrahas, et in secreto cubiculi tui ne maledixeris diviti: quia et aves cæli portabunt vocem tuam, et qui habet pennas annuntiabit sententiam.]Don’t curse the king, no, not in your thoughts; and don’t curse the rich in your bedroom, for a bird of the sky may carry your voice, and that which has wings may tell the matter.
