And all the souls that came out of Jacob’s thigh, were seventy: but Joseph was in Egypt.Dòng giống ông Gia-cóp tính tất cả là bảy mươi người; ông Giu-se thì đang ở bên Ai-cập.Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ἦν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ· ἦσαν δὲ πᾶσαι ψυχαὶ ἐξ Ἰακὼβ πέντε καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα.וַֽיְהִ֗י כָּל נֶ֛פֶשׁ יֹצְאֵ֥י יֶֽרֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֖ב שִׁבְעִ֣ים נָ֑פֶשׁ וְיוֹסֵ֖ף הָיָ֥ה בְמִצְרָֽיִםErant igitur omnes animæ eorum qui egressi sunt de femore Jacob, septuaginta: Joseph autem in Ægypto erat. All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.
After he was dead, and all his brethren, and all that generation,Rồi ông Giu-se qua đời, cũng như anh em ông và tất cả thế hệ đó.Ἐτελεύτησεν δὲ Ἰωσὴφ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ γενεὰ ἐκείνη. Quo mortuo, et universis fratribus ejus, omnique cognatione illa,Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.
The children of Israel increased, and sprung up into multitudes, and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land. The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
In the mean time there arose a new king over Egypt, that knew not Joseph:Thời ấy có một vua mới lên trị vì nước Ai-cập, vua này không biết ông Giu-se.Ἀνέστη δὲ βασιλεὺς ἕτερος ἐπ᾽ Αἴγυπτον, ὃς οὐκ ᾔδει τὸν Ἰωσήφ. Surrexit interea rex novus super Ægyptum, qui ignorabat Joseph. Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.
And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.Vua nói với dân mình: “Này đám dân con cái Ít-ra-en đông đúc và hùng mạnh hơn chúng ta.εἶπεν δὲ τῷ ἔθνει αὐτοῦ Ἰδοὺ τὸ γένος τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ μέγα πλῆθος, καὶ ἰσχύει ὑπὲρ ἡμᾶς·וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֶל עַמּ֑וֹ הִנֵּ֗ה עַ֚ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רַ֥ב וְעָצ֖וּם מִמֶּֽנּוּEt ait ad populum suum: Ecce, populus filiorum Israël multus, et fortior nobis est.He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.
Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply: and if any war shall rise against us, join with our enemies, and having overcome us, depart out of the land. Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”
Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens, and they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom and Ramesses. Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
But the more they oppressed them, the more they were multiplied, and increased:Nhưng chúng càng hành hạ họ, thì họ càng nên đông đúc và lan tràn, khiến chúng đâm ra sợ con cái Ít-ra-en.καθότι δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐταπείνουν, τοσούτῳ πλείους ἐγίνοντο, καὶ ἴσχυον σφόδρα σφόδρα· καὶ ἐβδελύσσοντο οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ. Quantoque opprimebant eos, tanto magis multiplicabantur, et crescebant:But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.
And the Egyptians hated the children of Israel, and afflicted them and mocked them:Người Ai-cập cưỡng bách con cái Ít-ra-en lao động cực nhọc.καὶ κατεδυνάστευον οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ βίᾳ,וַיַּעֲבִ֧דוּ מִצְרַ֛יִם אֶת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּפָֽרֶךְoderantque filios Israël Ægyptii, et affligebant illudentes eis,The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,
And they made their life bitter with hard works in clay, and brick, and with all manner of service, wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth. וַיְמָרְר֨וּ אֶת חַיֵּיהֶ֜ם בַּעֲבֹדָ֣ה קָשָׁ֗ה בְּחֹ֨מֶר֙ וּבִלְבֵנִ֔ים וּבְכָל עֲבֹדָ֖ה בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה אֵ֚ת כָּל עֲבֹ֣דָתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר עָבְד֥וּ בָהֶ֖ם בְּפָֽרֶךְatque ad amaritudinem perducebant vitam eorum operibus duris luti et lateris, omnique famulatu, quo in terræ operibus premebantur.and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.
And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews: of whom one was called Sephora, the other Phua,Vua Ai-cập nói với những bà đỡ đi giúp sản phụ Híp-ri, một bà tên là Síp-ra, một bà tên là Pu-a:Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ταῖς μαίαις τῶν Ἐβραίων, τῇ μιᾷ αὐτῶν ᾗ ὄνομα Σεπφωρά, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς δευτέρας Φουά·וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֖ת הָֽעִבְרִיֹּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֨ר שֵׁ֤ם הָֽאַחַת֙ שִׁפְרָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פּוּעָֽהDixit autem rex Ægypti obstetricibus Hebræorum, quarum una vocabatur Sephora, altera Phua,The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,
Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive.“Khi đỡ cho sản phụ Híp-ri, các người hãy xem đứa trẻ là trai hay gái. וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙ אֶת הָֽעִבְרִיּ֔וֹת וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן עַל הָאָבְנָ֑יִם אִם בֵּ֥ן הוּא֙ וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן אֹת֔וֹ וְאִם בַּ֥ת הִ֖יא וָחָֽיָהpræcipiens eis: Quando obstetricabitis Hebræas, et partus tempus advenerit: si masculus fuerit, interficite eum: si femina, reservate.and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded, but saved the men children. But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.
And the king called for them and said: What is that you meant to do, that you would save the men children? The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”
They answered: The Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they themselves are skillful in the office of a midwife; and they are delivered before we come to them.Các bà đỡ thưa với Pha-ra-ô: “Đàn bà Híp-ri không như đàn bà Ai-cập, họ khoẻ lắm: bà đỡ chưa kịp đến thì họ đã sinh rồi.”εἶπαν δὲ αἱ μαῖαι τῷ Φαραώ Οὐχ ὡς γυναῖκες Αἰγύπτου αἱ Ἐβραῖαι, τίκτουσιν γὰρ πρὶν ἢ εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς αὐτὰς τὰς μαίας, καὶ ἔτικτον. The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong. God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
And because the midwives feared God, he built them houses.Vậy, vì các bà đỡ có lòng kính sợ Thiên Chúa, nên Người đã cho họ có con để nối dòng.ἐπειδὴ ἐφοβοῦντο αἱ μαῖαι τὸν θεόν, ἐποίησαν ἑαυταῖς οἰκίας. Et quia timuerunt obstetrices Deum, ædificavit eis domos.Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
Pharao therefore charged all his people, saying: Whatsoever shall be born of the male sex, ye shall cast into the river: whatsoever of the female, ye shall save alive. וַיְצַ֣ו פַּרְעֹ֔ה לְכָל עַמּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר כָּל הַבֵּ֣ן הַיִּלּ֗וֹד הַיְאֹ֨רָה֙ תַּשְׁלִיכֻ֔הוּ וְכָל הַבַּ֖ת תְּחַיּֽוּןPræcepit ergo Pharao omni populo suo, dicens: Quidquid masculini sexus natum fuerit, in flumen projicite: quidquid feminini, reservate.Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
