| 9 | And this I pray, that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge, and in all understanding: | Điều tôi khẩn khoản nài xin, là cho lòng mến của anh em ngày thêm dồi dào, khiến anh em được ơn hiểu biết và tài trực giác siêu nhiên, | καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ ἐν ἐπιγνώσει καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει, | Et hoc oro, ut caritas vestra magis ac magis abundet in scientia, et in omni sensu: | This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment, |
| 10 | That you may approve the better things, that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ, | để nhận ra cái gì là tốt hơn. | 13 | So that my bands are made manifest in Christ, in all the court, and in all other places; | đến nỗi tại dinh vua quan cũng như ở mọi nơi khác, người ta đều hiểu rõ là chính vì Đức Ki-tô mà tôi mang xiềng xích. | ὥστε τοὺς δεσμούς μου φανεροὺς ἐν Χριστῷ γενέσθαι ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ πραιτωρίῳ καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς πᾶσιν, | ita ut vincula mea manifesta fierent in Christo in omni prætorio, et in ceteris omnibus, | so that it became evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ, |
| 14 | And many of the brethren in the Lord, growing confident by my bands, are much more bold to speak the word of God without fear. | Vì thấy tôi bị xiềng xích, phần đông các anh em có lòng tin cậy vào Chúa đã tỏ ra bạo dạn hơn để rao giảng lời Thiên Chúa mà không chút sợ hãi. | καὶ τοὺς πλείονας τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐν κυρίῳ πεποιθότας τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου περισσοτέρως τολμᾶν ἀφόβως τὸν ⸀λόγον λαλεῖν. | et plures e fratribus in Domino confidentes vinculis meis, abundantius auderent sine timore verbum Dei loqui. | and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear. |
| 15 | Some indeed, even out of envy and contention; but some also for good will preach Christ. | Đã hẳn, có những kẻ rao giảng về Đức Ki-tô vì lòng ganh tị và tranh chấp, song những người khác lại làm công việc đó vì ý ngay lành. | Τινὲς μὲν καὶ διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν, τινὲς δὲ καὶ δι’ εὐδοκίαν τὸν Χριστὸν κηρύσσουσιν· | Quidam quidem et propter invidiam et contentionem: quidam autem et propter bonam voluntatem Christum prædicant: | Some indeed preach Christ even out of envy and strife, and some also out of good will. |

| 17 | And some out of contention preach Christ not sincerely: supposing that they raise affliction to my bands. | Còn những người kia thì loan báo Đức Ki-tô vì tính ưa tranh giành, họ không có lòng ngay, tưởng làm như thế là gây thêm khổ cho tôi, trong lúc tôi bị xiềng xích. | οἱ δὲ ἐξ ⸂ἐριθείας τὸν Χριστὸν καταγγέλλουσιν, οὐχ ἁγνῶς, οἰόμενοι θλῖψιν ἐγείρειν τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου⸃. | Quidam autem ex contentione Christum annuntiant non sincere, existimantes pressuram se suscitare vinculis meis. | but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News. |
| 18 | But what then? So that by all means, whether by occasion, or by truth, Christ be preached: in this also I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. | Nhưng không sao đâu! Dù thế nào đi nữa với ý lành hay ý xấu, cuối cùng Đức Ki-tô được rao giảng là tôi mừng. Và tôi sẽ còn mừng nữa, | τί γάρ; πλὴν ⸀ὅτι παντὶ τρόπῳ, εἴτε προφάσει εἴτε ἀληθείᾳ, Χριστὸς καταγγέλλεται, καὶ ἐν τούτῳ χαίρω· ἀλλὰ καὶ χαρήσομαι, | Quid enim? Dum omni modo sive per occasionem, sive per veritatem, Christus annuntietur: et in hoc gaudeo, sed et gaudebo. | What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed. I rejoice in this, yes, and will rejoice. |
| 19 | For I know that this shall fall out to me unto salvation, through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, | bởi vì tôi biết rằng điều ấy sẽ giúp cho tôi đạt được ơn cứu độ, nhờ lời cầu nguyện của anh em, và nhờ Thần Khí của Đức Giê-su Ki-tô phù trợ. | οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι τοῦτό μοι ἀποβήσεται εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ τῆς ὑμῶν δεήσεως καὶ ἐπιχορηγίας τοῦ πνεύματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, | Scio enim quia hoc mihi proveniet ad salutem, per vestram orationem, et subministrationem Spiritus Jesu Christi, | For I know that this will turn out to my salvation through your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, |
| 20 | According to my expectation and hope; that in nothing I shall be confounded, but with all confidence, as always, so now also shall Christ be magnified in my body, wither it be by life, or by death. | Đó là điều tôi đợi chờ và hy vọng. Sẽ không có gì làm cho tôi phải hổ thẹn, trái lại tôi hoàn toàn vững tin. Bây giờ cũng như mọi lúc, Đức Ki-tô sẽ tỏ bày quyền uy cao cả của Người nơi thân xác tôi, dù tôi sống hay tôi chết: | κατὰ τὴν ἀποκαραδοκίαν καὶ ἐλπίδα μου ὅτι ἐν οὐδενὶ αἰσχυνθήσομαι, ἀλλ’ ἐν πάσῃ παρρησίᾳ ὡς πάντοτε καὶ νῦν μεγαλυνθήσεται Χριστὸς ἐν τῷ σώματί μου, εἴτε διὰ ζωῆς εἴτε διὰ θανάτου. | secundum exspectationem et spem meam, quia in nullo confundar: sed in omni fiducia sicut semper, et nunc magnificabitur Christus in corpore meo, sive per vitam, sive per mortem. | according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. |
| 21 | For to me, to live is Christ; and to die is gain. | vì đối với tôi, sống là Đức Ki-tô, và chết là một mối lợi. | ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος. | Mihi enim vivere Christus est, et mori lucrum. | For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. |
| 22 | And if to live in the flesh, this is to me the fruit of labour, and what I shall choose I know not. | Nếu sống ở đời này mà công việc của tôi được sinh hoa kết quả, thì tôi không biết phải chọn đàng nào. | εἰ δὲ τὸ ζῆν ἐν σαρκί, τοῦτό μοι καρπὸς ἔργου— καὶ τί αἱρήσομαι οὐ γνωρίζω· | Quod si vivere in carne, hic mihi fructus operis est, et quid eligam ignoro. | But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don’t know what I will choose. |
| 23 | But I am straitened between two: having a desire to be dissolved and to be with Christ, a thing by far the better. | Vì tôi bị giằng co giữa hai đàng: ao ước của tôi là ra đi để được ở với Đức Ki-tô, điều này tốt hơn bội phần: | συνέχομαι δὲ ἐκ τῶν δύο, τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν ἔχων εἰς τὸ ἀναλῦσαι καὶ σὺν Χριστῷ εἶναι, πολλῷ ⸀γὰρ μᾶλλον κρεῖσσον, | Coarctor autem e duobus: desiderium habens dissolvi, et esse cum Christo, multo magis melius: | But I am hard pressed between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. |
| 24 | But to abide still in the flesh, is needful for you. | nhưng ở lại đời này thì cần thiết hơn, vì anh em. | τὸ δὲ ἐπιμένειν ⸀ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ ἀναγκαιότερον δι’ ὑμᾶς. | permanere autem in carne, necessarium propter vos. | Yet to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake. |
| 25 | And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, and continue with you all, for your furtherance and joy of faith: | Và tôi biết chắc rằng tôi sẽ ở lại và ở bên cạnh tất cả anh em để giúp anh em tấn tới và được hưởng niềm vui đức tin mang lại cho anh em. | καὶ τοῦτο πεποιθὼς οἶδα ὅτι μενῶ καὶ ⸀παραμενῶ πᾶσιν ὑμῖν εἰς τὴν ὑμῶν προκοπὴν καὶ χαρὰν τῆς πίστεως, | Et hoc confidens scio quia manebo, et permanebo omnibus vobis ad profectum vestrum, et gaudium fidei: | Having this confidence, I know that I will remain, yes, and remain with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, |
| 26 | That your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus for me, by my coming to you again. | Như thế, trong Đức Ki-tô Giê-su, anh em càng có lý do để hãnh diện về tôi, khi tôi lại đến gặp anh em. | ἵνα τὸ καύχημα ὑμῶν περισσεύῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐν ἐμοὶ διὰ τῆς ἐμῆς παρουσίας πάλιν πρὸς ὑμᾶς. | ut gratulatio vestra abundet in Christo Jesu in me, per meum adventum iterum ad vos. | that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again. |
| 27 | Only let your conversation be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you, or, being absent, may hear of you, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind labouring together for the faith of the gospel. | Chỉ có một điều là anh em phải ăn ở làm sao cho xứng với Tin Mừng của Đức Ki-tô. Như thế, dù tôi có đến thăm anh em hay vắng mặt đi nữa, tôi vẫn muốn được nghe người ta nói về anh em là anh em luôn đứng vững, cùng chung một tinh thần, một lòng một dạ cùng nhau chiến đấu vì đức tin mà Tin Mừng mang lại cho anh em. | Μόνον ἀξίως τοῦ εὐαγγελίου τοῦ Χριστοῦ πολιτεύεσθε, ἵνα εἴτε ἐλθὼν καὶ ἰδὼν ὑμᾶς εἴτε ἀπὼν ⸀ἀκούω τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν, ὅτι στήκετε ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι, μιᾷ ψυχῇ συναθλοῦντες τῇ πίστει τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, | Tantum digne Evangelio Christi conversamini: ut sive cum venero, et videro vos, sive absens audiam de vobis, quia statis in uno spiritu unanimes, collaborantes fidei Evangelii: | Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News; |
| 28 | And in nothing be ye terrified by the adversaries: which to them is a cause of perdition, but to you of salvation, and this from God: | Về bất cứ điều gì, đừng sợ những kẻ chống đối anh em: đó là dấu chỉ cho thấy họ sẽ bị hư vong, còn đối với anh em, thì lại là dấu chỉ ơn cứu độ. Điều ấy là ân huệ Thiên Chúa ban. | καὶ μὴ πτυρόμενοι ἐν μηδενὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ἀντικειμένων (ἥτις ⸂ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς⸃ ἔνδειξις ἀπωλείας, ⸀ὑμῶν δὲ σωτηρίας, καὶ τοῦτο ἀπὸ θεοῦ, | et in nullo terreamini ab adversariis: quæ illis est causa perditionis, vobis autem salutis, et hoc a Deo: | and in nothing frightened by the adversaries, which is for them a proof of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God. |
| 29 | For unto you it is given for Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him. | Quả thế, nhờ Đức Ki-tô, anh em đã được phúc chẳng những là tin vào Người, mà còn được chịu đau khổ vì Người. | ὅτι ὑμῖν ἐχαρίσθη τὸ ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ, οὐ μόνον τὸ εἰς αὐτὸν πιστεύειν ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ πάσχειν), | quia vobis donatum est pro Christo, non solum ut in eum credatis, sed ut etiam pro illo patiamini: | Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf, |
| 30 | Having the same conflict as that which you have seen in me, and now have heard of me. | Nhờ vậy, anh em được tham dự cùng một cuộc chiến mà anh em đã thấy tôi phải đương đầu trước kia, và nay anh em nghe biết là tôi vẫn còn tiếp tục. | τὸν αὐτὸν ἀγῶνα ἔχοντες οἷον εἴδετε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ νῦν ἀκούετε ἐν ἐμοί. | idem certamen habentes, quale et vidistis in me, et nunc audistis de me. | having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me. |
